Summarising is using your own words to shorten a piece of text so that it includes only the essential information. Summaries have far fewer words than the original, but they still provide a clear indication of the main points made by the author.

Summarising can be achieved by:

  • Reading the source until you have a full understanding of the writer’s message
  • Putting the source aside and writing the message in your own words, being careful to:
    • Preserve the meaning of the original
    • Avoid using words and phrases that are similar to the original
